South Africa offers a full toolbox of visas for visits, study, work, family, investment and retirement. Below is a clear, keep-it-simple guide to the main categories, the usual proof you will need, and where NAC Travel International fits in.
Note: rules change. Always check the latest requirements before you apply.
Visitor’s visa, up to 90 days
Use it for: tourism, family visits, short business meetings.
Basics: get the visa in advance if your passport is not visa-exempt. Airlines must see a valid visa before boarding. Visas are not issued at the airport on arrival. Typical proof includes purpose of trip, return ticket, funds and accommodation.
Short-term work authorisation, Section 11(2)
Use it for: urgent work in South Africa for up to 3 months, such as technicians, trainers or film crews.
Basics: you need a Section 11(2) authorisation issued by a South African mission before you travel. It is not the same as a standard visitor’s visa.
Study visa
Use it for: full-time study at a registered institution.
Basics: letter of admission, proof of funds, medical insurance, police clearance, medical and radiological reports, and a passport valid at least 30 days beyond departure.
Work visas
Critical Skills Work Visa
Use it for: occupations on the official critical skills lists.
Basics: SAQA evaluation or proof of application to SAQA, employment contract, and other supporting documents. Valid up to five years, or one year initially if SAQA is pending.
General and Points-based Work Visas
Use it for: roles that meet the new points criteria or employer sponsorship requirements.
Basics: job offer, proof you meet points or labour certification rules, and usual personal documents. South Africa introduced a points-based system in late 2024 for work visas alongside other reforms.
Intra-company Transfer Work Visa
Use it for: transfers from a foreign branch to a South African entity for a fixed period.
Basics: prior employment with the sending company and documents confirming the transfer and skills. Applications are lodged through VFS under DHA rules.
Remote Work visitor’s visa
Use it for: living in South Africa while working remotely for a foreign employer or foreign clients.
Basics: proof of foreign-sourced income at or above the current threshold, tax position in a treaty or non-treaty country, and confirmation that you will not take local employment. Requirements were gazetted by Home Affairs in October 2024.
Business visa
Use it for: establishing or investing in a South African business where you will work.
Basics: business plan, registrations and compliance, and an undertaking that at least 60 percent of staff will be citizens or permanent residents. A prescribed capital contribution is commonly required, often cited as about R5 million unless waived in strategic cases.
Relative’s visa
Use it for: joining immediate family who are citizens or permanent residents.
Basics: proof of relationship and financial means from the sponsor, with a monthly amount determined by notice from the Minister. Missions publish checklists for documentation and validity.
Retired person’s visa
Use it for: retiring part-time or full-time in South Africa.
Basics: guaranteed passive income or assets producing income of at least R37,000 per month, plus standard health and police checks.
Medical treatment visa
Use it for: planned medical procedures in South Africa.
Basics: letter from the medical practitioner or hospital with treatment details, proof of funds and accommodation, and arrangements for aftercare. (Listed under temporary residence on official channels.)
Transit visa
Use it for: passing through a South African airport when required for your nationality.
Basics: proof of onward travel and entry permission for the next country. Airlines will not board travellers who require a visa but do not have one.
Electronic applications and where to lodge
South Africa operates an online eVisa/ePermits portal for certain short-stay applications and tracks status there. Many in-country or long-stay submissions are filed through VFS Global visa facilitation centres, which also handle extensions.
How NAC Travel International helps
Readiness check
We map your goal to the correct visa class, confirm where you must apply, and flag gaps such as SAQA evaluation, medicals, police clearances and proof of funds.
Evidence engineering
We assemble clean document sets and sequence them the way officers review files. For example, we reconcile itinerary dates with bookings and budgets, and prepare employer or university letters to match the regulations.
eVisa and VFS workflows
We guide you through the ePermits portal where applicable and manage VFS checklists, biometrics appointments and courier options so nothing is missing on submission.
Work routes, remote work and study
We coach on SAQA timing for Critical Skills, the points-based and employer paths, and the new Remote Work requirements, including the income and tax items set by Home Affairs.
Family and retirement
We prepare relationship proof for Relative’s visas and bank or pension evidence for Retired person applications, using mission checklists to avoid rejections.
Ethics and clarity
No guarantees, no shortcuts. If your case needs more evidence, we tell you early and help you strengthen it before you pay any fees.
